The Single Word AI-Chat Upgrade

This may be the easiest ChatGPT upgrade you’ll ever make. There’s no complicated prompt template or set of rules to follow. Just put one carefully chosen word, in all caps, followed by a colon, at the beginning of your prompt or request.

Just to be clear, there are no magic words that suddenly make ChatGPT brilliant. But there are words that make it easier to manage. Placing a single word, or command, like TIGHTEN:, HOOK:, REMIX, at the beginning of your prompt immediately narrows the assignment.

It’s not a secret hack. It’s simply clear direction, delivered in its most compact form. You already know how this works. Think about the single words you see in your music log and format clock. Tease, Promo, Intro, Backsell. Each one turns on a specific part of your creative brain, activating how you’ll plan and perform. Starting with a single word command in ChatGPT does the same thing. It diminishes ambiguity and improvising because you’ve directed the AI on which direction to take before it starts generating an answer.

The list of ChatGPT command words I’ve cobbled together below is mostly focused on writing and performance ideation. Although it's far from comprehensive, it should spark some ideas and experimentation. They also work with Gemini, Claude, or whatever AI platform you prefer. Since the nuances of how they should be formatted vary, I've added a prompt you can use in any AI chatbot to generate a command word list it will recognize.

In ChatGPT, use these command words exactly as written, in all caps followed by a colon, and then add your prompt and context.

PUNCH-UP: Ignite your writing, sharpen clarity, add energy, swap weak verbs for strong ones.

STORYTIZE: Turn into a short story with tension and payoff

PASTICHE: Mimic a specific author or style (name the author or describe a style)

PERSUASIVE: Increase conviction without hype (describe who this is for in your prompt)

TLDR: Give a short summary, then key bullets (copy and paste an article or a link)

SHORTEN: Cut by 30–50% without losing meaning (hello PPM!)

TIGHTEN: Keep length, improve punch and flow

ONE-LINER: Reduce to a single sentence (try this one with contest promo copy)

HOOK: Generate 10 scroll-stopping openings (try this one for social posts)

ANALOGIZE: Explain using a strong analogy

REMIX: Create 10 variations with different angles (paste your favorite image sweeper)

DEJARGON: Remove buzzwords, make it human

SITCOM-PITCH: Transform this into a sitcom scene that brings the concept to life. Wrap up with the lesson at the end.

CRASHCOURSE: Everything you need to know, in five minutes flat.

TONE-SHIFT: Rewrite in a specified tone. (describe the tone)

Here are a few for the sales department that I know will work in Claude; I have not tested them in ChatGPT.

For the pitch meeting or prospect one-sheet:

/closer - Writes sales copy or messages designed to close the deal

Make that mattress sale spot come to life:

/storysell - Turns a boring message into a story people want to hear

Use this one for a Client Needs Analysis to create VBRs and follow-ups:

/blindspots - Finds what you're missing that you didn't think to ask about

Use this prompt to get the command words that work best with the AI platform you use most:

Create a list of single-word commands I can put at the beginning of a prompt to narrow its assignment or request by telling you which direction to take before you start generating an answer.  List the words, what they do, and how they should be formatted when used (e.g., all caps with a colon, slash +lowercase, etc.).
